Chesil Sailability launch!
On Saturday, Chesil Sailability was officially launched at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy Outdoor Show. This 2012 legacy in practice was launched in true Paralympic style, with a Paralympic Davey lamp. As Ian White, local Paralympic torch bearer, lit the flame, Chairperson, Hugh de Iongh, declared that "Chesil Sailability is on fire!" Through the day, a number of interested sailors and volunteers found out more about the group’s plans for 2013. Debbie Blachford, the Royal Yachting Association Sailability Manager commented, “It is very exciting to see a new Sailability initiative which captures the Olympic and Paralympic legacy. This new project will enable disabled young people and adults to experience the thrill and exhilaration of the water. But very importantly, it will provide a pathway to all aspects of sailing, be it leisure, formal training courses or racing.” Chesil Sailability now has an initial group of potential sailors and volunteers, but there is much work left to do to get afloat, from training the volunteers to sourcing funding, to turn this vision into a reality.
